Orthostatic Intolerance & POTS

Orthostatic intolerance is a condition in which the body fails to properly regulate blood pressure and heart rate when a person moves from lying down or sitting to an upright position. In healthy individuals, the cardiovascular system automatically compensates for the effects of gravity on blood flow when standing. In people with orthostatic intolerance, this compensation is impaired, causing blood to pool in the lower body, reducing circulation to the brain and upper body, and producing symptoms such as lightheadedness, fainting, rapid heartbeat, fatigue, nausea, and cognitive difficulties. Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is the most commonly recognized form, though the umbrella also includes neurally mediated hypotension and other related dysautonomia presentations.
