Post-Surgery Recovery

You made it through the hard part. Now comes recovery, and if you've ever had surgery on a knee, shoulder, back, ankle, or hip, you know that the days and weeks that follow can be just as challenging as the procedure itself. Pain flares. Swelling sets in. Sleep gets disrupted. And the path back to doing the things you love feels longer than you expected. That's where cold therapy comes in.

For more than 40 years, Polar Products has been helping people recover smarter, not just tolerate the process. Our Active Ice® cold therapy systems were built specifically for post-surgical recovery, delivering a consistent flow of cold water directly to the surgical site through anatomically designed pads. No dripping ice bags. No rewrapping gel packs every 20 minutes. Just steady, controlled cold therapy working quietly in the background while you rest and heal.

Why Cold Therapy Matters After Surgery

The body's natural response to surgery is inflammation. Blood rushes to the area, tissue swells, nerve endings activate, and pain signals start firing.

Cold therapy works by helping to counteract that response. Lowering the temperature of the tissue slows cellular activity, reduces fluid buildup, and naturally dulls pain signals, giving your body a calmer environment to heal. Cold therapy produces vasoconstriction, which helps lessen pain, decrease muscle spasm, and reduce inflammation. Source: Aetna

What's changed in recent years is how well that mechanism has been documented across a wide range of surgeries and recovery scenarios.

A 2024 meta-analysis found that applying cold therapy after total knee replacement reduced patient pain by a factor of nearly 3. Source: Enovis Research published in Therapeutic Hypothermia and Temperature Management confirmed that cryotherapy was generally effective in reducing post-operative shoulder pain across patients recovering from rotator cuff repair, shoulder stabilization, and arthroplasty. The picture that emerges across the research is consistent: cold therapy is a meaningful part of a good recovery, and continuous cold flow devices are built to deliver it more reliably and comfortably than a bag of ice ever could.

Less Pain, Less Medication

One of the things we hear most from customers is how much they appreciated having an Active Ice® system during recovery because it let them use less medication. That experience lines up with what researchers are finding.

Studies have shown that cold therapy after knee or shoulder arthroscopy can reduce pain by up to 50% and opioid consumption by up to 70%. Orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists are increasingly incorporating cold therapy into multimodal recovery protocols specifically because patients who use it tend to rely less on pain medication — a meaningful benefit for anyone who wants to recover as naturally as possible. Active Ice® cold therapy systems fit naturally into that kind of protocol. Easy to use at home, comfortable enough to wear during rest, and effective enough that many of our customers tell us their surgeon recommended a cold therapy machine as part of their discharge instructions.

Built for Where It Hurts

The Active Ice® 3.0 Cold Therapy System isn't one-size-fits-all. Because surgery happens everywhere, we've designed a full range of therapy pads that wrap and conform to specific body regions — so the cold goes exactly where you need it.

Whether you're recovering from a knee replacement, an ACL repair, rotator cuff surgery, a spinal procedure, or foot and ankle surgery, there's an Active Ice® System built for your recovery. Active Ice® Cold Therapy Systems are FSA and HSA eligible, which means you may be able to use pre-tax dollars toward your purchase. It's one more way to make your recovery a little easier on the budget, too.
