NeuroMyelitis Optica
Neuromyelitis optica (NMO), also known as Devic's disease, is a rare autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the optic nerves and spinal cord, causing inflammation that can result in vision loss, paralysis, and loss of sensation. Most cases are associated with antibodies targeting a protein called aquaporin-4, which plays a key role in fluid regulation in the central nervous system. NMO is often relapsing in nature, and each attack can cause cumulative and potentially permanent neurological damage.
In NMO, nerves are already damaged and have a harder time communicating with one another. Increases in body temperature impair the speed at which nerves signal each other and the rest of the body, making an already compromised system even less effective. Studies have shown that even small increases in body temperature can impact nerve conduction speed in people with NMO. Source: Neuromyelitis-Optica.net
