Mitochondrial Disease
Mitochondrial disease is a group of genetic disorders that affect the mitochondria, the structures within cells responsible for producing energy. When mitochondria fail to function properly, cells throughout the body are unable to generate sufficient energy, affecting the organs and systems that demand the most power, including the brain, muscles, heart, and digestive system.
MitoAction recommends cooling vests as a tool for people with mitochondrial disorders, noting that it can be dangerous for some mito patients to be out in the heat for prolonged periods and that cooling vests, either moisture-evaporating or ice pack styles, can be used by people of any age or size and can even be custom-made to accommodate ostomies, body braces, and wheelchair seating. - Heat Intolerance
"This is my daughter's 2nd Kool Max vest, as she outgrew the 1st (which lasted 4+ years of daily use). Due to her Mitochondrial Disease, she is unable to regulate her body temperature. This vest has given her the freedom to go outside when it is over 75 degrees. THANK YOU for this precious gift, and the freedom to go places and still maintain a safe core temp."- E. McClanahan in Concord, CA
