Syringomyelia
Syringomyelia is a spinal cord condition in which a fluid-filled cyst, called a syrinx, forms and slowly expands within the cord itself. As it grows, the syrinx puts pressure on the surrounding nerve tissue, disrupting the signals that normally travel between the body and the brain. For many people living with syringomyelia, that disruption shows up in a very specific and sometimes dangerous way: the ability to feel temperature changes, particularly in the hands, arms, and upper body, becomes unreliable or disappears altogether.
This means that someone with syringomyelia may not accurately sense when they are becoming dangerously overheated. Coupled with the autonomic nervous system disruptions the condition causes, which can interfere with the body's ability to sweat and self-regulate, managing body temperature from the outside becomes an important part of daily safety and comfort.
Polar Products cooling vests and wraps provide consistent, wearable temperature control that doesn't depend on the body's own signals working correctly. For syringomyelia patients who also live with chronic neck, shoulder, and upper body pain, our cold therapy systems offer targeted, drug-free relief that can be part of an everyday pain management routine.
"I have a severe spinal cord issue (Syringomyelia) that your products have been amazing for. I have the fashion vest, I have the scarf, the neck and upper spine wrap- ALL KOOL MAX® PRODUCTS from you guys, which OMG, have changed my life! I actually lent my neck wrap to my cousin who works on the summer beaches as a Marine Patrol Officer (both land and sea) and now he is ordering from your company as well. Your vest is amazing. I added a Medic Alert Charm to the zipper pull as I have to explain to everyone why I am wearing a vest in the summer." - Cynthia in New York
