Lupus
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body's own healthy tissues and organs, causing widespread inflammation that can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, and nervous system. Symptoms vary widely and tend to flare and subside unpredictably.
Many people with lupus experience heightened sensitivity to heat, which can directly trigger or worsen flares. The autonomic nervous system dysfunction associated with lupus can disrupt the body's ability to regulate temperature normally. Additionally, a significant number of lupus patients develop Raynaud's phenomenon as a comorbidity, which causes abnormal vascular responses to temperature changes. Fatigue, one of the most universal lupus symptoms, is also closely tied to heat exposure, with many patients reporting that even mild overheating produces profound exhaustion. On the medication side, some commonly prescribed drugs for lupus, including certain antimalarials and corticosteroids, can affect the body's thermal regulation and heat tolerance. Taken together, staying cool is less a comfort preference for many people with lupus and more an active part of managing the condition day to day.
Heat Related Issues with Lupus"Overall, the ability to be in the sun for a period of time is one that is very meaningful to me, but it takes a deep understanding of the consequences to be worth it. To help with sun safety, I always make sure to try tostay in the shade or water to keep my body at a cool temperature. I have learned that it is when my body gets hot that I break out or get sick.” - Tiffany.Source:Sharing the Journey - Lupus Foundation of America
"I am really enjoying the Kool Max® vest in the dog days of August and September in hot, humid southwest Georgia. I have had trouble all summer and this vest has allowed me to spend time with my horses even on very hot days."- L. Kelley in Georgia
